That sibling magic! | The Corbett Creative Photography

A relaxed, in home newborn photoshoot in Rugby

How it started

I received an email from Kay using my website contact form when little Heidi was 10 days old. She explained that she wanted to capture those early days as soon as possible and get a newborn family photoshoot booked in whilst beautiful Heidi was still so tiny. I knew I needed to chat to Kay right away so we arranged a phone call to chat in a little more detail and like they say, the rest is history!

Before the shoot

Getting to know a family before a photoshoot is at the very top of my priority list. I get a sense of who they are before the day and can plan their family photoshoot session accordingly. This always leads to sessions being incredibly relaxed as there is so much to talk about and like this session, if there are older siblings, I get to know their interests as well as the things they are not so keen on! When booking, Kay completed the newborn and family questionnaire where I got an insight into their family dynamic. Bizarrely, when reading her answers it turned out that we shared a lot of things in common including having the same wedding venue!

On the day

With the family living so close in Rugby to myself, I had the novelty of actually being able to walk to this photoshoot…something that doesn’t happen very often! Just as I was about to knock on their front door, I actually paused as I could hear the magical sound of lots of giggling coming from inside. In fact, this sound continued throughout the photoshoot and just went to demonstrate the close, fun, loving dynamic of this beautiful family.

Like at all of my newborn and family photoshoots, the first thing that I do is introduce myself to all family members especially the smaller members of the team and of course, the furry ones too! Whilst little Heidi’s big sister was having a quick snack, I took advantage of the time to have a quick look around the house. When I do this, I’m particularly looking for pockets of light and appealing backgrounds that, when combined together, make the ideal location for photos. I was extremely fortunate that in this family’s beautiful home both the living room and the master bedroom had dual aspect windows so that was where we based most of the photos!

By this time, little Heidi was snoozing away in her sleepyhead in the kitchen so I thought it was time to take advantage of this situation and get some sibling photos. The novelty of being allowed to climb on the kitchen table meant that big sister Callie was more than happy to join in!

Let the fun begin!

As I mentioned earlier, my main aim for in home family photoshoots are for the parents to feel relaxed. Whether it’s climbing on Daddy’s shoulders, playing aeroplanes with Mummy or jumping on the bed, I have a whole host of games and activities up my sleeve to instigate those genuine smiles from all family members and keep big brothers and sisters engaged. By doing this, rather than putting families through a series of stiff poses and pleading with little ones to say ‘cheese’ at the camera, these sessions are full of fun and a great opportunity to spend some quality time together making memories. As a parent to two little ones myself, I know that sometimes life with a newborn is hectic and you're constantly clock watching and checking how long they’ve napped for and how much they’ve fed. These sessions are a great opportunity to switch off from all of that for a couple of hours and instead, enjoy this incredible family you have created.

As you can see these activities were extremely popular and actually also led to some really quiet, tender moments too especially between the siblings. It was utter magic!

Fancy an in home newborn or family photoshoot?

For newborn sessions, I recommend getting in touch from your 20 week scan to ensure I have availability. I’m always more than happy to pop a couple of dates in the diary to give us some flexibility and then we can confirm your photoshoot once your little one has arrived and you’re all settled!

Please feel free to drop me a message by completing this short contact form here.

Thanks so much for reading!
