What to wear for an autumn family photoshoot | The Corbett Creative Photography

It’s getting to my favourite time of the year again! You just can’t beat those glorious autumn colours, the crisp sunny mornings and the knitwear creeping back into the wardrobe, can you?! And don’t even get me started on the speciality coffees! It’s even more exciting this year as it will be The Corbett Creative Photography’s first year offering autumn mini sessions. I’ve been spending the past couple of weeks busily location hunting across Rugby, Leamington and Coventry finding gorgeous potential locations for our sessions together.

I always want you, my wonderful clients, to get the very best from our sessions together and part of that is feeling confident and comfortable in front of the camera. One of the first questions people ask after booking a shoot is

‘What on earth should I wear?’

Fear not! I’ve got some top tips that will help you choose outfits that you feel comfortable in whilst looking amazing in front of the camera.

Colours

Colours really will have a huge impact on your photos. Try to stick to earthy colours such as dark greens, browns, burnt orange, red and neutrals which compliment the natural surroundings you will be in. Try to avoid really bold colours such as bright yellow, purple etc which will look very stark against the natural background. Likewise, avoid lots of black and too many bold patterns which can be distracting as we want all the focus to be on you and your beautiful family! I usually suggest starting with Mum’s outfit first and build the rest of the family’s around that.

When thinking about what other family members might wear, try to avoid being really matchy and instead think about creating a colour palette of around four colours which compliment each other.

Texture

Layers and texture work really well as they not only add warmth but also interest to your photos. Knitwear such as scarfs, jumpers and cardigans work perfectly for Autumn and if layered up, are a good alternative to wearing a coat which can sometimes restrict movement and add formality to your photos.

Pairing knits with dresses works particularly well as you also get the benefit of the flowy material which adds a softness and is just magical if it catches in the wind.

Footwear

Soggy feet never make for a happy child so thinking about footwear is key. We may be running in slightly damp grass and amongst leaves during the session so wearing practical footwear is a must! Boots are both practical and work well in photographs so that may be a good option. They look really cute on little ones too especially when paired with woollen tights and dresses. Wellies also work well but try to avoid bright colours if you can.

Inspiration

And now a couple of things to avoid…

  • Pictures, characters, slogans and captions. They can be distracting in your photos and can date your pictures.

  • Too much black, bright colours or lots of busy patterns or stripes.

I can’t wait to get started with The Corbett Creative’s first year of autumn shoots and meet lots of you! I hope these simple tips will help you when it comes to planning what to wear for your shoot. If you want to any more inspiration, please feel to check out my pinterest boards here. Lastly, if you are deliberating between a couple of different outfit options and want some advice please feel free to give me a whatsapp and send some pictures over. That is what I’m to help with!

Looking forward to seeing you soon!
